Our Daily Bread, known by locals as ODB, first opened in 1984 and was run by the Mowery family. The delicatessen is known for sandwiches, soups, salads, and beer. When the Mowery’s were ready to sell in 1998, husband and wife team Sam and Jennifer were interested.
Sam always wanted to own a restaurant but wanted one in a Southern college town. Since ODB is on the doorsteps of Appalachian State University, the couple knew ODB was calling their names. Sam and Jennifer also loved the fact that historic buildings surrounding ODB. The famous Mast General Store was across the street, and Boone Drug was next door.
The couple decided to revise the menu as new owners because their goal was to serve made-from-scratch food using local ingredients. They replaced most items except the local favorite, the Jamaican sandwich.
The menu wasn’t the only thing that got updated. In 2007, Sam & Jennifer rolled up their sleeves to remodel the interior. In the demolition process, they discovered a treasure trove. The original ceiling was Italian tile, and paneling hid brick walls. They also found building materials from bygone eras. Using these items, they replaced the weathered pine flooring around the bar with chestnut boards.
The result is a chic yet comfortable ambiance with historical roots and beauty. But all of this is pointless if the food doesn’t measure up. Rest assured, it does.
Our Daily Bread is a hot spot for college students, faculty, locals, and vacationers. While popularity doesn’t guarantee you’ll dine on good food, in the case of ODB, you’ll find they are the exception. Based on reviews, ODB is one of the best places in Boone for lunch.
