The Bottom Line:

Whether you’re looking for comfort food or want to order a combo out of your comfort zone (pastrami and egg anyone?), Fig Bistro is a good place to stop. We do recommend that you plan on extra time to be seated, even with reservations.

Other than having the opportunity to taste things together you would never think of serving together, the fun of Fig Bistro is how very laid back it is. You’re greeting by a cool brick and stucco exterior and walk in to find a (small) dining area with blonde wood floors, black furniture, and a fair sized bar. The staff is always friendly and ready to answer questions, and you are likely to have questions. The menu is a fascinating array of dishes with ingredients that do not seem to belong together — and yet, they work.

Fig Bistro prides themselves on being an intimate neighborhood restaurant that creates new and different interpretations of both American and French cuisine. In addition to offering seasonal dishes, Fig offers daily specials based upon the fresh local ingredients that are available. Think farm to table meets mad scientist chef. We mean that in the best possible way, considering Chef Kelly Tantalo has come up with so many interesting combinations.

Here’s a quick sampling of our favorites at Fig:

Appetizers
Though you can’t go wrong with any of their appetizers, we are especially fond of the Pommes Frites, house-cut fries with truffle oil, and sprinkled with just the right amount of parmesan and parsley. The Smoked Trout is also amazing, although we’re not sure why they consider it an appetizer. We were served a plate of hot smoked trout with fingerling potato salad, red onions, radishes, capers, and a delicious vinaigrette. If you’re with a group, plan on everyone wanting a bite.

Brrunch
If you’re like us, trying breakfast at a new place is always an adventure. It’s amazing to see what a good chef can do with an ordinary breakfast item. The Fig Bistro offers several interesting breakfast options, including their Oreo Pancakes, Oreo cookies atop a large portion of pancakes. Paired with their delicious coffee, you’ll wonder if you’re having breakfast or dessert. Also pretty great is the Eggs in Avocado, a blend of avocado, poached eggs,  lime zest tomatoes, olive oil, basil, and house made remoulade.

Sandwiches
You’ll really want to give the Pastrami and Fried Egg Sandwich a try. Stacked on fresh rye bread is pastrami, emmental cheese, fried egg, and Lusty Monk mustard. The flavorful blend manages to work together in such an interesting way that you’ll want to try it again.

Main Dishes
For a light but delicious entrée, we recommend the Salmon, served with rosemary potatoes, grilled fennel, and beets. If you’re looking for comfort food, don’t miss the Macaroni Gratin with applewood bacon and a green salad. Finally, if you’re in the mood for poultry, the Chicken Breast with ricotta gnocchi, escarole, tasso, and poultry jus is quite satisfying.

Desserts
Fig Bistro’s dessert menu is small, but offers a few delicious options. Our very favorite is the Panna Cotta (a cold Italian custard) served with chocolate sauce and peanuts. If peanuts are not to your liking, the Ice Cream Trio – three scoops of homemade ice cream – is always satisfying.
