Pigeon Forge goes all out for Christmas. Every year, the shops and neighborhoods deck the halls and streets to the nines: tens of thousands of lights, decorations, and other fun details set the scene for a holiday season filled with cheer. And this year, they’ve added another event: the Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail, which gives visitors a new perspective on the beauty of Pigeon Forge during the holidays.
Every year, Pigeon Forge’s Wonders of Light lights up the town, making Pigeon Forge turn into one of the country’s largest free outdoor light displays. But for the first time in 2022, the Pigeon Forge Riverwalk Trail is becoming part of the scene. The riverwalk trail will feel like a different world from November 10-February 19th this year, as 20 new light displays on and around the trail create the impression of walking through a magical wintry world.
Walk through a glowing fairy flower garden filled with blossoms and butterflies, then stroll by a 50-foot-long caterpillar. One display features wildlife local to the area. Visitors can take in an array of woodland creatures, from frogs to turtles and larger-than-life mushrooms. Each themed area is surprisingly well-organized and designed, offering something for everyone, young and old alike.
How Much does it Cost?
The Wonders of Light Walking Trail, along with the rest of the Wonders of Light displays all over Pigeon Forge, are completely free to visitors. Over 6 million lights are glowing up the town, and visitors come from near and far to take in the sights.
Where Do You Park to Access the Trail?
The Riverwalk Trail spans 6 miles, and it can be accessed from a few different locations. To walk the full length of the trail, you’ll want to start at either the Municipal Parking Lot (which offers free parking for trail guests), or the intersection of Old Mill and Butler Avenue, which is located near the Old Mill itself.
Parking can be tricky depending on the time of your visit. Your best bet is to start by checking availability at the Municipal Parking Lot, which offers free parking for trail guests. The trail can also be accessed from a few other spots: Patriot Park and the LeConte Center. You can also park at the Old Mill and walk the trail in the other direction.
Is the Trail Handicap- and Stroller- Accessible?
The trail is completely paved and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs! Whether you complete the entire trail or just take a short jaunt along a section or two, you’ll feel like you’re a world away from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.
What else is there to do in Pigeon Forge this holiday season?
Plenty! One of our favorites is the Wonders of Light Christmas Village, where 35+ booths feature the work of local artisans. You’ll find uniquely wonderful gifts here, each with local flair and creativity you won’t find at any big box stores. Even if you’re not there to shop, walking through the Christmas Village is a delight–particularly if you have a warm cup of something to sip as you stroll.
Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas offers another spectacular attraction for thousands of visitors each year. And you’ll find a slew of holiday shows in Pigeon Forge itself, along with restaurants and wineries offering limited-edition menus and tastings fit for the season. You might find yourself coming for the light displays, strolling the Wonders of Light Walking Trail, and staying longer than expected, thanks to the unique atmosphere and the warm, welcoming smiles you’ll encounter during your visit.
