Tucked away in a small shopping district 10 minutes outside of downtown Gatlinburg, TN, Split Rail Eats is a family-friendly spot that truly offers something for everyone. From tasty indulgences like Southern Fried Pickles and Fried Cheese Curds to freshly prepared salads and cool kid-approved Avocado Toast, every member of your group will be sure to find something delicious to enjoy.
On our recent outing to find great food without making the trip to downtown Gatlinburg, we struck the golden hour between breakfast and lunch and decided to try a little from both sides of the menu. Split Rail Eats serves three meals a day, with breakfast running until 11:00 each morning.
If you’re looking for a seriously great start to your day, you’ll find classic breakfast staples, as well as some innovative twists. Show up for lunch or dinner, and you’ll be pleased by the interesting offerings, which include tasty sandwiches and burgers, as well as four different kinds of “Tater Bowls.” You can stick with the original tots, or opt for hand-cut, made-to-order French fries!
While the atmosphere at Split Rail Eats is nothing too fancy, we found the rustic modern interior to be immaculately clean and bright. Big bay windows look out onto the other shops of Covered Bridge in the Glades, and the wood floors and cheerful artwork make the space welcoming and comfortable.
All orders are placed at the counter and staff are friendly and approachable with any questions about the menu. You pay at the counter after ordering, and then your food is brought out as it is prepared. When you finish your meal, simply leave your tray at your table and the attentive staff will handle the clean-up.
There was plenty to choose from at Split Rail Eats, but the menu also felt very thoughtful, and not overwhelming. Their focus is clearly on fresh, homemade preparations of Southern diner classics, and we found ourselves enjoying every bite!
Some of our favorite menu items at Split Rail Eats include the following:
B.L.E.A.T.
This yummy breakfast sandwich is more than a clever name, it’s a new take on an old classic. Think “BLT,” but with a couple of brekkie brekkie-friendly twists. This sandwich includes bacon, arugula, egg, and avocado on toasted country bread. If you’re not already drooling, now imagine this dressed with chipotle mayo. Talk about sunny side up!
Southern Fried Pickles
Freshly prepared, with well-seasoned batter and crisp, juicy pickles, all at a reasonable price for the portion. Good stuff, ‘nuff said!
Split Rail Chicken Salad Sandwich
Featuring large pieces of seared chicken, plus fresh herbs and veggies in a creamy dressing, this namesake sandwich might just become your new favorite. Pro tip: enjoy it served warm, and definitely say yes to the side of hand-cut fries (which is included with all sandwich and burger options).
Cinnamon Roll Hand Pie
For a sweet treat, you can’t go wrong with Split Rail Eats’ ooey gooey cinnamon roll hand pie. Hey, we don’t blame you if you order it for your main meal! And savory hand pie lovers, please take note: Split Rail Eats also offers hand pies with chicken, ham, and veggie fillings.
A great spot for tourists, locals, or those just passing through, Split Rail Eats offers fast, fresh food that will make your whole party happy, no matter what time of day.
Insider Tip:
Split Rail Eats makes everything from scratch, including their sinfully delicious baked goods. Call ahead to ask what’s available before you come, or allow yourself to be surprised by the day’s offering.
