As one of the oldest courses in Western North Carolina, and registered on the National Register of Historic Places, the Asheville Municipal Golf Course off Fairway Dr. in Asheville, NC, was designed by a famed course architect Donald Ross in 1927. This historic course features a scenic design that accomplishes the difficult feat of being both challenging and fun. The Asheville Municipal Golf Course has a par 72 front nine, spanning 3,246 yards from the back tees. The 3,194 back nine place accuracy over distance. Therefore, although by today’s standards the course is not long, it does prove to be a great course overall. The middle course spans 5,939 yards with a slope of 116 and a rating of 69, and the senior course spans 5,110 yards with a slope of 110 and a rating of 65.5. The lady’s course spans 4,568 yards with a slope of 115 and a rating of 67.2. It’s worth noting that the Asheville Municipal Golf Course architect Donald Ross, mentioned above, played a vital role in shaping the sport of golf all over the United States. Throughout the early 20th century, he designed over 400 courses, many of which remain respected and valued courses even today for those who hold the sport dear. Many of the 400 courses he designed are private, but at least a few are open to the public, such as the Asheville Golf Course, a present-day example of his ingenious design.
Some of Ross’s most famous designs can be found at Pinehurst No.2, Memphis Country Club, Oakland Hills, Inverness Club, Seminole Golf Club, and the Aronimink Golf Club. He gave great attention to course design detail, with his signature as a course architect being “naturalness.” Ross was also the first president and founding member of the American Golf Society of Golf Course Architects and was admitted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977.
