The Westville Pub, opened in 2002, is a favorite local watering hole, with a casual and slightly funky West Asheville Bohemian vibe. The selection of more than 25 craft beers here is one of the best in town and there’s even talk of the pub expanding its operation into making a signature brew of its own.
The menu focuses on traditional pub fare, including burgers, fried baskets of pickles and vegetables, wraps and sandwiches. Brunch, served seven days a week, combines traditional eggs and bacon with innovative creations like a pulled pork and egg sandwich and “eggs crawly,” fried eggs topped with a crab cake and hollandaise sauce.
While the Westville is definitely not a meatless eatery, vegans and vegetarians will find plenty of things from which to choose. Tempeh may be substituted for meat in most entrees and vegan “burgers” may be substituted for meat in all of the burger choices.
On the down side, the service here can definitely be a little inconsistent and ranges from excellent to extremely inattentive with very little middle ground. Unfortunately, your experience here will somewhat depend on the luck of the draw in what server you get. The narrow bar/restaurant can also get a little noisy in the evenings, especially during a big game.
The home-away-from-home atmosphere includes a pool and game room with two pool tables, a shuttleboard and a variety of video games, not to mention the 11′ television screen. The pub also hosts local musicians across a variety of music genres. (See the pub’s website calendar for the current schedule.)
A few of our favorite menu items at Westville Pub include:
Caprese Burger
The combination of locally-grown, plum tomatoes; fresh mozzarella cheese and fresh basil leaves atop a 1/4 pound beef patty drizzled with balsamic vinegar makes the Caprese burger a winner in our book. Of course, it’s served with hand-cut French fries. Yum!
Homemade Biscuits and Gravy
This is my favorite brunch entree at the Westville Pub. The buttermilk biscuits are light and fluffy and the sauce is loaded with sausage. It takes me back to my grandmother’s kitchen.
Bloody Mary
Don’t leave without sampling the house Bloody Mary cocktail. It’s made with just the right amount of horseradish and garnished with a salad of olives and other vegetables.
Westville Wrap
This medium spicy, satisfying sandwich is just right for a late evening meal. It’s made from roasted pork, mixed with shredded cheddar cheese, house-made corn salsa, black beans, lettuce, ranch dressing and a side of the Westville’s own salsa.
Carolina Cape Shark
We enjoy the beer-battered shark sandwich and find it meatier than traditional fish sandwiches. It comes with fries or slaw, lettuce, onion and tartar sauce.
Insider Tips:
-If you enjoy the Westville Pub and plan to frequent the place, we recommend that you cultivate a good working relationship with a server you like and request him or her when you visit to avoid the spotty service issue.
-Try the plentiful sidewalk seating if you aren’t a fan of dark bar lighting (as we aren’t.)
-The Westville Pub is also a great place to keep in mind for late night eating, after a concert or long day out and about. The kitchen stays open late most nights.
